(A Mothers of Civilization Highlight article)
When her daughter, Kameelah, was five years old, Maalikah Muhammad, the founder of Kameelah’s Closet, was frustrated that she could rarely find beautiful modest clothing for her daughter to wear. Mrs. Muhammad, located in Houston, Texas, was so fed up with the selections in department stores that she started making modest and age-appropriate clothes for Kameelah. Kameelah’s Closet was born when she found herself constantly going into Kameelah’s closet to recreate suitable designs for Kameelah or to help other mothers in her area dress their girls appropriately. Today, Kameelah’s Closet is highlighted as one of the official designers for “Mothers of Civilization Day.”
Her designs have helped to create a movement in which mothers and daughters could embrace modesty and dress like sophisticated and classy young women. Mrs. Muhammad, who is also the Regional Student Sister MGT Captain for the Southwest Region, is a businesswoman and world traveler. She has visited 5 of the 7 continents and said she has seen evidence of the Black woman being the Mother of Civilization everywhere she has visited.
